ScubaLab Testers Choice Dive Computers: Oceanic ProPlus X
The Oceanic ProPlus X won Testers Choice for console computers during ScubaLab's 2017 dive computer review. See why our test divers chose it as their favorite.
I’m Roger Roy, the ScubaLab director. We tested the Oceanic ProPlus X dive computer. With a beautiful full color screen and a simple, logical operation that makes it easy to use, it was our Tester Choice for console computers.
We tested it at the University of Southern California Hyperbaric Chamber on Catalina Island. We also tested it in the field at Blue Grotto Dive Resort in Central Florida. We put it through a series of simulated dives alongside other computers to gauge the performance of its decompression algorithm. We evaluated how easy it was to set up and use, how well we could see the screen in different conditions, and how well it presented important data during our dive.
The previous black-and-white versions of the ProPlus air-integrated console worked so well it seemed frivolous to want color. But it’s not just the new model’s vibrant color screen (a “thin-film transistor” said to lower energy demand) that won us over to the ProPlus X, although testers did rate it excellent for readability underwater.
The new four-button menu navigation also was rated excellent by divers, who appreciated the logical menu paths made crystal clear by on-screen prompts that guide you through setup. With a display about 2.5 x 2 inches in a console 6 inches long, the PPX is a bit chunky, but the sizeable lithium-ion battery holds a charge well.
With Bluetooth, four-gas capability, a quick disconnect and dual algorithms, the ProPlus X was our Testers Choice for console computers.
