Dive Bonaire: Windsock

Plaza Resort’s unique house dive amazes with great access and biodiversity

Explore the local flora and fauna beneath the contrails of departing 737s. Windsock, so named for the silk tubes flapping above the Flamingo Airport runway, begins at a collection of yellow rocks on the beach’s north side. This 30-100 foot dive has an easy entry from the nearby pier. The shore is accessible directly from the reef, a perfect place for novices and scuba experts alike to snack and relax post-dive.

Windsock slopes sharply from the drop-off, unrolling a bulbous bed of hard and soft corals. Watchful divers might spot sea turtles and rays nestled on the sandy floor. This site’s superior visibility means divers can gaze out almost 100 feet at meandering angelfish, squid and eel—day or night—without any trouble. Be sure to look out for blue spotted cornetfish, a rare but incredible sight in the Caribbean.
