On Pelagian, a liveaboard yacht that escorts divers to the best dive sites in Indonesia’s Banda Sea, adventure is more than a promise. This floating sanctuary, managed by Wakatobi Dive Resort, blends elegance and world-class diving with an intimate experience for just 10 guests. From the moment you step aboard, the friendly crew anticipates your every need to deliver a customized journey.

Elegance on the Waves

Originally built as a military vessel in Norway in 1965, Pelagian was purchased by Wakatobi in 2005 and converted into the dive vessel it is today. The makeover included modernizing the interior design, fitting a new entertainment system and upgrading the outdoor space. Stepping onto Pelagian today feels like entering a world where barefoot elegance meets the untamed beauty of the ocean.

There are five spacious cabins, including the master suite, which spans the full width of the vessel and occupies the entire bow on the main deck. It’s furnished with a king-size bed dressed in delicate linens, a cozy lounging area decked out with a 40-inch flat-screen TV, and an en suite bathroom with aromatherapy toiletries and a rainforest shower. Equally inviting, the other cabins offer plush bedding and plenty of storage space.

There’s a salon with panoramic windows and cozy seating. Whether you’re sharing stories or simply soaking in the endless sea views, the decor’s muted latte and cream tones create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The dining area is where the chef presents his culinary works of art. Mornings begin with made-to-order breakfasts on the shaded aft deck, while three-course lunches and dinners offer a fusion of Indonesian and Western flavors. There are always three choices (meat, fish or prawns), as well as vegetarian options. Expect vibrant seafood salads, delicate sushi platters or regional dishes with spiced sambal sauces.

The spacious deck is ideal for sunbathing or stargazing, while the lounge areas invite you to curl up with a book or enjoy a movie night with a cocktail. “Having just 10 guests aboard allows us to focus on accommodating requests and anticipating needs without asking,” says Ramon Crivilles, Pelagian cruise director.

Pelagian is often the only liveaboard cruising the area, leaving divers to explore the thriving reefs with fewer outside distractions.

Diving Into the Deep Blue

But the real magic lies beneath the surface. This yacht takes you to some of the most pristine reefs in Southern Sulawesi. You’ll explore vibrant coral gardens, lush island lagoons and fascinating muck-diving sites. Dives begin from custom-built tenders, with the crew conveniently handling your gear. For less experienced divers, the staff steps it up. “Expect extra personal attention from our dive experience managers, who will help with skills, and provide good briefings and presentations on marine life,” says Crivilles.

Look out for pygmy seahorses and frogfish when on the walls of Karang Kaledupa and Karang Kapota. Explore the exceptional muck-diving sites of Buton Island’s Pasarwajo Bay, where the elusive long-armed octopus resides. Pelagian’s route also skirts the southwestern edges of Wangi Wangi and Kaledupa Islands, where the thriving reefs are patrolled by the occasional hammerhead shark.

Pelagian is often the only liveaboard cruising the area. “This means there are no other divers around, and the reefs are less subject to human impact,” says cruise director Judith Terol Oto. Whether you’re exploring shallow sites or dramatic vertical walls, bottom times often exceed 70 minutes. With up to four dives a day—including night dives—every moment underwater is unforgettable.

Beyond the Dive

While diving is the heart of the Pelagian experience, there’s much more to enjoy. Feel like kayaking or paddleboarding? Make your request in advance and the crew will pack gear at the start of the cruise. “If someone requests a land excursion, the cruise directors and crew will make it happen,” says Crivilles.

What truly sets Pelagian apart is its staff. With three dive experience managers and a guest-to-crew ratio of nearly 1-to-1, the level of service is incomparable. From the dive guides who share their deep knowledge to the chef who crafts customized meals, every member of the crew goes the extra nautical mile to ensure the journey is unforgettable.

Pelagian isn’t just a boat, it’s a transformative experience that will leave you longing to return to the sea. As the sun sets, painting the sky in hues of gold, violet and pink, you’ll find yourself reminiscing about the day’s adventures. The vibrant reefs, mesmerizing marine life and shared moments will stay with you long after you're gone.
