We tested the Garmin Descent Mk2S. Packing outstanding performance into a minuscule package, it was our Testers Choice for dive computers over $450.

We tested dive computers at the University of Southern California Hyperbaric Chamber on Catalina Island. We also tested computers in the field at Blue Grotto Dive Resort in Central Florida.

We put computers through a series of simulated dives to gauge the performance of their decompression algorithms. We evaluated how easy computers were to set up and use, how well we could see their screens in different conditions, and how well they presented important data during our dive.

With a 43mm case and weighing about 2 ounces, Garmin’s latest dive computer takes everything we loved about the Descent Mk2, and packages it into the smallest, lightest dive computer we’ve ever seen. Pleasing to the eye, and comfortable to wear and operate, it took top score for ergonomics in the test.

The 1.2-inch color display is equally impressive and offers excellent visibility at depth and the surface. Despite its size, the small display is able to present data clearly and cleanly thanks to a sleek layout that keeps depth and NDL visible at all times. Test divers were especially fond of the intuitive ascent/descent graphic.

Alerts provide clear instruction and are accompanied by haptic feedback and a series of different audible tones. Alternate screens can be customized and provide divers with a stopwatch and a digital compass.

Testers had no problem operating the computer’s tiny, responsive buttons underwater, but if thick gloves interfere with operation, simply tapping the screen will also cycle through dive displays.

With a dive profile graphic and a host of data, including GPS coordinates, the computer’s dive log took top marks from testers.

The Mk2S is more than a dive computer, offering users additional GPS, smartwatch, sport and fitness capabilities; despite all this, it’s incredibly easy to pick up and use, scoring excellent for intuitive operation.
