Dive Bonaire: Forest
Klein Bonaire’s renowned dive site is a “woodland” like no other
Klein Bonaire"Forest"
A small southwestern peninsula harbors one of the most popular dives on Klein Bonaire. Forest — so named for its “forest” of black corals — takes a steep drop through clear Caribbean waters. Divers need walk only a brief distance from resort to dock, and then travel by boat to the site. Carib Inn’s dive boats depart to Forest at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. by request, weather permitting.
Forest’s mooring rests in about 25 feet of water next to a steep drop-off. As divers go deeper, the beautiful black corals become more abundant, along with many types of sponges and hard corals.
A large overhang looms at around 90 feet, providing shelter to some remarkable sea life. Every two to three years, a huge loggerhead turtle named Forest returns to lay her eggs on the beach and relax along the overhang.
The shallows are home to large colonies of gorgonians — perfect places to snoop for cleaning stations, camouflaged fish and fascinating invertebrates. A pair of angelfish often greets divers as they enter or depart this gorgeous dive.
