Dive Bari Reef
Sand Dollar Resort, located on Bonaire’s west coast, has the site for your next marine life mixer: Bari Reef.
Right off the resort beach with minimal current, you’re an easy shore entry away from the Caribbean’s most diverse reef ecosystem. This site is flush in both species richness and the sheer number of creatures that call this reef home—over 404 species to date. REEF.org even named Bari Reef the tropical western Atlantic’s #1 site for sea life diversity.
Elephant ear sponges, huge rope sponges and purple tube sponges shelter a veritable metropolis of moray, lobster, flounder, barracuda, sea horses, tarpon and more. Bari Reef’s coral spawn occurs in August, when divers can behold hundreds of polyps simultaneously releasing their eggs into the turquoise waters.
Bari Reef’s drop-off begins 25 to 30 meters down, gently sloping and bottoming out at 130 meters to a sandy flat. This site is pleasant no matter how you dive it, but starting at roughly 50 to 60 meters and kicking back along the drop-off and terrace is typically recommended. Squid love to scuttle along the terrace area. The rubble area provides refuge for the reef’s shyer critters. It’s a perfect place for divers to spot yellowhead jawfish and frogfish.
