Only 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, laid-back Santa Catalina practically sits in Hollywood’s backyard. Ferries within a half-hour drive from LAX await to whisk you away to the island. A popular getaway for silver-screen legends of old such as Clark Gable and Mary Pickford, Catalina’s star-studded reputation continues below the surface.

If You Have One Day

Hop the Catalina Express ferry from the mainland—about an hour’s ride—to Avalon and California’s premier shore dive: Casino Point Dive Park. Established in 1962, this pristine marine reserve has a stunning amount of biodiversity. There’s plenty to see, including several shipwrecks and a plaque commemorating Jacques Cousteau. But the main draw is the forest of giant kelp, where you’ll find the show’s headlining giant black seabass. You’ll need multiple dives to explore all 2½ miles of this remarkable marine preserve. Restrooms and tank rentals are available on-site. Make some time to tour Avalon’s famous casino, where big-band tunes were once broadcast across the country from the world’s largest circular ballroom.

If You Have Two Days

A two-tank boat dive is a great way to reach the other sites around Catalina’s rocky coastline. The sharply sloping terrain makes shore access at Casino Point the exception rather than the rule, and other sites, such as Farnsworth Bank, can be found farther offshore. This spectacular seamount is carpeted with purple hydrocoral and anemones. The site gets deep quickly and is considered an advanced dive. White seabass, yellowtail, barracuda and torpedo rays abound. Afterward, take in the island’s rugged terrain with a safari or zip-line tour. You may even get a glimpse of Catalina’s famous bison, which were originally brought over in 1924 for a Hollywood production and have since become permanent residents.

If You Have Three Days

If you journey to the far west side of the island, you’ll find Eagle Rock. This pinnacle rises out of the water from a depth of 100 feet. Start at the bottom and slowly ascend, circling the gorgonian-covered pinnacle, while keeping an eye out for calico, sheephead, scallops and rockfish.
