Tech Diver Boot Camp: Round 2

Due to the overwhelming response to this summer's Tech Diver Boot Camp, Mike Ange Expeditions is offering an additional fall program of entry-level technical dive training.

This nine-day intensive training workshop is open to advanced recreational divers interested in moving beyond the mundane to earn certifications in Decompression Procedures, Advanced Nitrox, Extended Range and Entry Level Trimix.

Michael Ange, technical editor of Scuba Diving, will lead a team of first-rate technical instructors with one goal: To turn 16 Joe Divers into qualified tech divers. They won't make you do push-ups, but they will demand your best in a physically and mentally rigorous training schedule designed to expand your understanding of diving physics and physiology, dramatically improve your water skills, and teach you the fundamentals of deep decompression diving using multiple gas mixtures.

Expedition Details

Dates: Oct. 22 to Oct. 31, 2004

Location: Forty Fathom Grotto in Ocala, Fla.

Cost: $2,400. Price includes nine nights accommodations, double occupancy; daily admission fees to Forty Fathom; all textbooks; certification cards; tuition for decompression procedures, advanced nitrox, extended range, and entry level trimix courses; decompression gases and helium fills as required; and tanks. Transportation, meals, and air fills are the responsibility of the diver. Deposits of $500 are due immediately upon selection. The balance is due 30 days prior to the start of the program.

Required Equipment: Technical divers are strongly encouraged to train in their own gear, however rental equipment may be reserved through www.sub-aquaticsurvivor.com. Divers who would like purchase instructor-recommended gear packages can do so through the dive center sponsor of the expedition, SEAduction® Dive Services. All products will be delivered to the candidates at the start of the expedition.

You'll need:

• BC: A technical style harness capable of supporting twin back mounted cylinders and a front mounted stage bottle with a back inflation BC bladder containing at least 65 pounds of lift.

• Regulators: Two high performance deep rated first and second stage regulators; an SPG; a five- to seven-foot hose for one second stage regulator; and an oxygen cleaned first and second stage with a short hose SPG or port gauge.

• Lights: A primary dive light with a minimum 14-watt bulb capacity and a small, compact back up light;

• Decompression marker: A primary dive reel (cave type) with at least 240 feet of line; a lift bag with at least 50 pounds of lift (no spill design preferred)

• Exposure protection: A wetsuit or dry suit, suitable for repetitive exposures in 69 to 72 degree water for durations of up to two hours.

Prerequisites

1) Applicants must be in good physical condition, able and willing to pass a medical examination for technical diving with a licensed physician of their choice.

2) Applicants must have at least 75 logged dives, advanced open water certification, and it is strongly recommended that applicants possess a basic nitrox certification.

3) Selected divers will be expected to produce certification cards and logbooks at the expedition start.

Note: Candidates will be subjected to an intense physically and mentally demanding training schedule. Attendance at this program guarantees access to training in accordance with the standards of the certifying training agency, but it does not guarantee certification. Candidates must earn certification by meeting all prescribed standards of the instructional team and the training agency.
