I’m Roger Roy, the ScubaLab director. We tested the Bare Velocity Ultra 3mm wetsuit. With well-executed design features that provided a great balance of comfort and warmth, it was our Testers Choice for suits over $200. We tested it in the field at Blue Grotto Dive Resort in Central Florida, and in ocean dives in South Florida. Our testing included both fresh and salt water, in water temperatures from the low 70s to the mid-80s. We evaluated it for ease of donning and doffing, and for its fit and overall comfort. We also rated it for how warm it kept us, and whether it limited our range of motion.
Our test included suits designed for both the warm and cold extremes of a 3mm’s range. There were also some that were more of a mid-range balance of comfort, convenience and insulation – including the Velocity Ultra. It uses heat-reflecting Celliant fiber lining, but only in the torso. The rolled smooth skin wrist seals are comfortable, very effective at blocking water penetration, and still easy to don and doff; likewise the zippered ankles. The suit’s very high stretch material and touches like seams located to avoid underarms made it, as one test diver said, “comfy as flannel jammies.” Admittedly our test routine favored suits with a mix of warmth, comfort and convenience; at the coldest extremes of 3mil range, suits that are less comfortable and convenient might be warmer. But when it came to dive-all-day comfort, the Velocity Ultra was a stand out. As one diver noted, after already diving with five suits, “this is the most comfortable I’ve been all day.” The Velocity Ultra is our Testers Choice for suits over $200.
