The 2008 Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar will focus on providing your COURSE DIRECTORS, INSTRUCTOR TRAINERS, and INSTRUCTORS with a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites. The two-day seminar will include one day of classroom-based learning and one day of in-field training. A welcome reception will be held on the evening of SEPTEMBER 8, 2008. There is a $20 fee to participate in the seminar. Please contact Debra Shefi from the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research (information below) before July 18, 2008 to reserve your space in the Seminar.

The classroom sessions will include a series of lectures on:

• Shipwrecks and ship construction

• Seafaring culture: what we can learn from shipwrecks,

• Issues in conservation: take only photos and leave only bubbles,

• Laws pertaining to submerged cultural resources - both federal and state,

• Artificial reefs: the importance of maintaining the wreck for the sea life,

• Prospective teaching outline and classroom modules for your training organization,

• And more…
  The in-field training will include:

• A SCUBA dive on the Brick Wreck and a dive on the Mystery Wreck in the Middle Keys
• The diving provides participants with direct experience relating to the previous day's lectures.
